  1. Lake Murray’s “Dining on the Dam” is the event to look out for in 2020. Not only will you enjoy the beautiful views of the Dreher Shoals Dam, but also the locally produced food, delectable dishes cocktails and craft beer. The invitation extends only to those 21 and older, ID card necessary. Mark your calendars for April 5, 2020, the festivities will begin at 4 and end at 8.   2. For all of you football and Gamecock fans, you’ll be excited to hear that UofSC has released next year’s schedule. The season will officially begin on September 5th. Here are a few games we look forward to: South Carolina vs. Georgia (Nov. 7), South Carolina vs. LSU Tigers (Nov. 14) and finally, the in-state rivals game South Carolina vs. Clemson (Nov. 28th).   3. 2020 Lexington County Chili Cook-off Who doesn’t love good chili? On February 9th, warm yourself up with a hearty bowl from over 20 cooks. This is the day you get to be a judge. Being that this will be a cook-off, your favorite pot of chili could be the winner, so save room! The Icebox Amphitheatre will be the host of this event from 12 PM to 5 PM.   4. Do you enjoy socializing, food and dancing? Then the 2020 Taste of Lake Murray is right up your alley! Artists Going Commando, The Voltage Brothers and Cody Webb, will be holding live performances, you surely won’t want to miss. This will all take place at the Doubletree by Hilton Columbia, on March 5th. The dress code is casual and patriotic, as the proceeds for this event will go towards the July 4th celebration. https://www.tasteoflakemurray.com

  5. Diving into a lake in the heart of winter may not seem fun, but it is when done for a good cause. The Lake Murray Polar Plunge is a fundraising event to support the Special Olympics of SC. Those who donate earn a day of music, games and jumping into the lake with about a hundred other donors. A past attendee wrote this, “It makes your heart feel warm after you freeze your legs off and every other part of you.” In 2018, $35,000 were raised, and the numbers keep growing. Make it your 2020 goal to make a donation, and if you’d like, jump in!   6. When you think about rides, cotton candy and lights, the state fair most likely comes to mind. Celebrating its 151st year in 2020, the SC State Fair will be returning October 14-25th. Even if you aren’t a fan of roller coasters, come and enjoy the variety of food vendors. From elephant ears, Latin styled street food and shrimp and grits, yum! Why not check out the art, floral, livestock and agriculture competitions as well? Whether you are a thrill seeker, foodie or a fan of local talent, the fair will be 12 days of entertainment for you, your family and friends. https://www.scstatefair.org/

  7. For Scottish and Irish Americans, the countdown has begun for the Tartan Day South Celtic Festival. For four days, Celtic heritage is brought to the Midlands, showcasing food, music and sports unique to their culture. If you enjoy being educated on various cultures, this event is perfect for you. Exhibits that highlight Scotland and Ireland’s history can be found throughout the venue. Traditional dances will also be performed, and you are welcome to join in.
